Fabric softeners and sheets are used to soften fabrics when tumble drying to reduce their harshness and potential abrasive skin action.

Without softeners, drying clothes in a tumble dryer can leave them with a harsh, abrasive feel, which can irritate sensitive skin. Tumble drying also causes the smaller sized fibers in the fabric to "pill" or migrate towards the surface which can also result in irritation to the skin.

But fabric softeners and sheets are based on a cocktail of petrochemicals and fragrances in often untested combinations that increasingly, are shown to cause eye and skin irritation and allergic reactions on contact with the skin whilst some reports also indicate potential adverse reactions on the respiratory and central nervous systems, nausea, dizziness and headaches through inhaling the softener vapour.
